Screw or pneumatic conveying: which route fits your plant?

Short answer

Choose the transport route before comparing individual machines. A screw and a pneumatic line can both move powder, but their layouts, utilities and effects on the material are different.

Silo installation with several material transfer routes
Start with the source and destination, then measure horizontal distance, height and obstacles. The complete plant layout matters more than the length visible from one viewpoint.

When a screw is worth considering

A screw can provide a direct mechanical connection between nearby equipment. Check inclination, supports, drive access and space to remove the screw for maintenance. Several changes of direction may require additional transfer points.

Its capacity depends on the material and filling conditions. Sticky material, abrasive solids and fragile particles need different design considerations; nominal diameter alone is not a comparison.

What a pneumatic route includes

A pneumatic system needs a material feed point, air source, conveying pipe and a receiver that separates solids from air. The receiving filter and its discharge are part of the conveying duty, not optional finishing accessories.

Vacuum operation tends to draw air inward at leaks; pressure operation can release dust outward. This does not remove the need to assess containment, joints and filtration. Dense and dilute phase are different operating regimes, not interchangeable settings on any pipeline.

Compare the same operating requirement

  • Route: length, elevation, bends and number of destinations.
  • Material: particle damage, wear, moisture, temperature and bulk density.
  • Utilities: electrical demand, conveying air and filter-cleaning air.
  • Operation: batch or continuous transfer, changeovers, cleaning and retained material.

A pipe that fits the building does not prove the powder will convey reliably. Difficult products may require trials before selecting velocity, pipe size and pressure.

A practical enquiry for your plant

Send a route sketch with source and destination heights, target tonnes per hour, batch size and material data. State whether the priority is gentle handling, avoiding contamination, fitting an existing building or feeding multiple receivers.

For cement and minerals, highlight wear. For food and feed, include cleaning and product damage. For chemicals and plastics, identify compatibility, static and dust hazards. Compare the full installed system and maintenance burden rather than just the conveyor purchase price.

Send the material data and a photograph or layout of the installation so we can define the equipment and connection requirements.
